Walmart employees to get raises

Walmart employees to get raises

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (KTHV) - Minimum wage is going up for many Walmart employees in 2015.

Half a million Walmart employees at both Walmart and Sam's Club stores are expected to make $9 dollars an hour starting in April. That is a $1.75 increase from the original federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. By February of 2016, employees should be making $10 an hour.

"I think this could potentially go a long ways to improving employee morale, which could improve customer engagement," says Brian Yarbrough, analyst with Edward Jones. Happier employees, and more welcoming stores, could also help Walmart's sales, which haven't been able to sustain significant momentum since the recession, he says.

National forests firewood permits help slash heating costs

National forests firewood permits help slash heating costs

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (September 16, 2014) – As cooler temperatures loom around the corner, many homeowners are considering how best to heat their homes this winter. The Ozark-St. Francis and Ouachita National Forests are helping homeowners answer this question by offering firewood permits in many areas of the Arkansas and Oklahoma forests.

"Collecting dead and down firewood on national forests is a great way to help bear the high cost of beating colder temperatures," said Shawn Cochran, Ozark-St. Francis National Forests Ecosystems Staff Officer. "Firewood permits are affordable; they help remove burnable material from the forest floor, and wood heat is both economical and efficient."

‘Stamp Out Hunger’ This Saturday, May 10th

This Saturday, May 10, 2014, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) joins forces with the Arkansas Foodbank, United Way, the AARP Foundation and others to help Stamp Out Hunger in Little Rock and throughout Arkansas.  Letter carriers will fan out across the nation to pick up donated food on doorsteps and beside mailboxes as they deliver the mail.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, held annually on the second Saturday in May, has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive benefitting Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, and its network of food banks. Last year’s drive brought in 74 million pounds of food and provided assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table.
