Hot Springs to unveil historic fountain

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - A ceremony unveiling the historic National Humane Alliance Water Trough Fountain will take place at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 7 at the intersection of Malvern Avenue and Broadway Street.

The solid granite fountain dates back to the early 1900s when the National Humane Alliance placed an estimated 125 animal fountains on city streets across America.

The Alliance was founded in 1897 by Hermon Lee Ensign, a wealthy business tycoon with a great love of animals. Ensign’s goal was to educate people to be considerate of animals and of each other.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Oaklawn management made the decision to cancel Thursday’s nine-race card after more than five inches of rain left the track too saturated for racing.

“The safety of the horses and riders is always our first concern,” said Director of Racing David Longinotti. “The rain began about 3 p.m. Tuesday and has barely stopped since.”

Oaklawn remains open for gaming and simulcast racing. The game room will remain open until 3 a.m.

Live racing is scheduled to resume Friday with a 1:30 p.m. first post.

Protecting your pets in freezing weather

Protecting your pets in freezing weather

ARKADELPHIA, Ark (KTHV) - Just like humans, animals can also be at risk for frostbite and hypothermia.

One important safety tip: don't leave your pets in the car, as it can get as cold as a refrigerator. Veterinarians also recommend investing in some winter gear for your animals, and keeping them layered.

"Big things are tips of ears, tail tips and the paws are pretty susceptible to frost bite, and it just takes a few minutes really. The cold and the salt and everything in those paw pads can cause cracking and bleeding." said Veterinarian Dr. Travis Anderson.
