Juvenile escapees captured after officials failed to lock doors

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - After a lengthy investigation, officials found that deputies with the Garland County Juvenile Detention Center failed to lock the security doors, which aided in the escaped of two juveniles on Feb. 10.

According to Sheriff Mike McCormick, six employees with the Juvenile Detention Center have been suspended without pay and one shift supervisor was terminated following the incident.

“Since taking office on Jan. 1, I have worked to improve standards, training and accountability in the Garland County Sheriff’s Office,” said McCormick. “It is our duty to protect the public at all times by ensuring the security of our detention facilities. We have rules to ensure the facilities remain secure and it is the duty of our employees to follow those rules and regulations.”

Reports state that the two juveniles breached five security doors during their escape. They were recovered within 24 hours of the escape.
