Hot Springs' website wins Ark. Business' Distinction Award

HOT SPRINGS – Members of the Hot Springs Board of Directors accepted Arkansas Business’ 2015 City of Distinction Technology Advancements Award for cities over 20,000 in population at an awards ceremony during the recent Arkansas Municipal League Fall Conference.

The award was given to Hot Springs for the development of its website. It is featured in a full-page article within an Arkansas Business special report.

BNPD doesn't want a Grinch to ruin your holidays

BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) - There is at least one Grinch, if not more, in every community looking for opportunities to steal the joy from families this holiday season.

Henderson professor to talk heroes, superheroes at ASMSA lecture

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Henderson State University psychology professor Dr. Travis Langley believes comic book superheroes have the ability to teach us about heroes in real life.

Langley will share some of his knowledge about the subject at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts Science and Café Lecture on Thursday. He is the featured speaker at the event, which will be held at 7 p.m. at Kollective Coffee and Tea, 110 Central Ave. He will speak on “Psychology and Superheroes,” including how superheroes are good stand-ins for the study of what makes real-life heroes.

His lecture will focus on several particular superheroes such as Iron Man, Captain America and Batman. He called them some of the most down-to-earth superheroes, because they don’t have superpowers. They have very human qualities that make them more relatable to real-life individual, according to Langley.

MALVERN, Ark. (KTHV) - A main road in Malvern near the Acme Brick factory was blocked off by high water on Saturday.

The Malvern Swift Water Rescue Team had to launch from the area near Chapman Creek after water flooded onto Grigsby Ford Road near South Walco Road.

According to officials, a hunter had become trapped by rising water near this intersection earlier in the evening of November 28.

Hot Spring County has set up barricades warning drivers away from the area. Joey Norwood, an Assistant Chief with the Malvern Fire Department said that the hunter called the department after he realized the water had isolated him on some high ground. The victim knew he wouldn't be able to get his truck through the rising water.

The team launched a boat and managed to get him out safely.

BRYANT, Ark., —The Bryant Parks Department is now offering citizens the opportunity to prioritize their city park improvements via an online survey. The information will be gathered through the end of the year in order to establish a priority list for future parks improvements. Utilizing the suggestions of multiple community organizations and Bryant citizens, the survey is comprised of over 50 multiple choice questions that rank each assessed need using a Likert (ranked average) scale of the comprehensive results. The data resulting from this survey will be compiled from now until December 31 at 11:59 p.m. Each survey must be completed in its entirety to be accepted as a qualifying survey.

Prescribed fire planned at Hot Springs National Park

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - The Hot Springs National Park is planning to conduct prescribed fire operations the week of November 2, weather permitted.

“Weather conditions permitting, prescribed fires will be completed along West Mountain Drive and Sugarloaf Mountain in the Cedar Glades Road area,” said Josie Fernandez, park superintendent. West Mountain roads will be closed during burn operations and commuters need to plan for alternate routes.

Old-growth forest restoration, exotic species reduction and fuels reduction are the primary reasons for conducting prescribed fires.

“Fire is a natural process, and has been a part of Arkansas landscapes for thousands of years,” said Fernandez. “Prescribed fire is a way for land managers to restore ecosystems in a carefully planned manner, using very specific weather and personnel guidelines to protect public safety while achieving resource management objectives.”

Jefferson Co. Sheriff's Office issues reminder to parents on child identification

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ark. - (Oct. 29, 2015 – With recent flash news alerts regarding missing children, teens, and others alike throughout the state, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office decided to issue a reminder to all parents regarding the indentification of their children.

Major Lafayette Woods, Jr. issued the following statement on Thursday:

When a child or someone you know is reported missing, emotions become raw, which can hinder the ability of parents or love ones to make rational decisions. Yet, their actions and the actions of law enforcement in the first 48 hours are critical to the safe recovery of a missing. Knowing what you can do, what others can do, and where to go for help will not only expedite the search and recovery of your child or love one, it also will help to ease the emotional and financial burden of the search.
